The Cancer Summer Student Research Program has been in existence at NJMS since 1969 and is supported through an NCI Cancer Education Program Grant (Prinicipal Investigator, Harvey L. Ozer, M.D., R25CA019536-26). This program, which has been continuously funded by the NCI for 38 years, provides a unique eight-week research experience for New Jersey Medical School's first and second-year medical students as well as undergraduate students enrolled in our combined BS/MD seven-year program. Students participate in biomedical research activities in a laboratory or clinical setting at either the NJMS-UH Cancer Center, or the broadercancer center research community  on the Newark Campus, while developing a close working relationship with a faculty member. Administration of the program has recently moved to the NJMS-UH Cancer Center from the Office of Research and Sponsored programs, and the program will now be part of the cancer center's broader training mission in cancer education for both Ph.D. and M.D. scientists and trainees. New components of the program will be introduced next year, including attendance at interdisciplinary tumor conferences where patient cases and clinical trials are discussed.

Most projects provide a stipends. A directory of faculty research projects from the 2007 program is available through the link below, and 2008 program projects will be available on the website in mid February. Once the program opens for applications students should contact the faculty mentor directly to discuss, in more detail, the goals of the project for which they are interested. Faculty will evaluate the candidate's qualifications to undertake the research proposed; and, with faculty approval, the student applies for a specific project to the Cancer Center Research Support Office through the program coordinator, Lorie-Anne Phillips, M.S., atphillilo@umdnj.edu .

Program Requirements:

All students participating in the Summer Research Program are required to complete the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) Basic Course online, before the program begins, available at http://www.umdnj.edu/hsweb/Education/ .

For instructions, click here

At the conclusion of the program students are required to submit an abstract summarizing their research. These abstracts are published annually in the Summer Student Research Abstract Booklet.

To download the 2007 Summer Research Program Abstract Booklet click here

Finally, students are required to present their research projects at the annual Student Poster Day Events usually held the first week in August.

Participation in the Summer Student Research Program is often the student's first research experience. It provides an opportunity for each student to evaluate the possibility of an academic career in medicine, inspire and motiviate students to pursue an investigative career in oncology, as well as appreciate the value and importance of biomedical research to tomorrow's physicians.

Any interested students not enrolled in New Jersey Medical School may review the available projects and independently arrange a volunteer position directly with a faculty mentor. For information on volunteer positions, they should contact Ms. Lydia Dean of the NJMS Research Office at deanle@umdnj.edu

For information on how to participate as a student or sponsoring investigator, view the information below, or contact the NJMS-UH Cancer Center Director of Reseach Programs, Gwendolyn Mahon, Ph.D. at mahongm@umdnj.edu.
